I want to help people,” says Dr. Loren Lortscher, reflecting on his path from Dartmouth undergrad to psychiatric resident at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Over the years, Dr. Lortscher and his partner, James Couto, found ways beyond clinical practice to help people, inspired by the students and faculty they met through Dartmouth alumni events. “These incredibly smart kids were doing such remarkable research,” Couto recalls.
Moved by their experiences, the couple made a $3 million bequest to the Geisel School of Medicine to support student-based oncology research. “Even if it changes just one student’s life,” Couto says, “I would be happy.”
