Dartmouth Health, Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine Receive Historic $20 Million Gift to Launch Dartmouth Health at Home Programs
On September 29, 2026, Dartmouth Health and Geisel announced a transformative $20 million gift from Richard "Dick" Levy, PhD, D ’60, former biotech executive and longtime philanthropist. The gift will launch Dartmouth Health at Home, a collaborative initiative that unites clinical, research, and policy expertise to shift safe, effective care from the hospital to the home.
A Revolution in Home Healthcare
Dartmouth Health at Home will bring high-quality clinical care directly into patients’ homes through new primary and palliative care services, meeting people where they feel most comfortable. At the heart of the initiative is the new Family Caregiver Institute at Dartmouth Health, which will offer hands-on training, resource navigation, and access to home care aides for the millions of family members who provide care every day, often without the support they need. Underpinning it all is a formal coordination framework spanning Dartmouth Health and Geisel, grounded in the interdisciplinary expertise of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, ensuring the model is not only effective, but sustainable and scalable nationwide.
This effort builds on the foundation of The Susan & Richard Levy Health Care Delivery Incubator, launched in 2020, which generated more than 150 ideas and funded 22 pilot projects.
A Gift Born of Personal Experience
A member of Dartmouth's Class of 1960, Dick Levy went on to earn his PhD in nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He built a distinguished career at Varian Medical Systems, a global leader in cancer care technology, ultimately serving as CEO and later executive chairman.
Levy's commitment to reimagining home care is personal.
When his wife, Susan, was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, Dick became her primary caregiver. He managed her medical needs, household responsibilities, and his own well-being, all while watching the woman he loved for nearly 60 years slip away. Susan passed away in 2023.
Levy recognizes that he was fortunate to have the resources to find help when he needed it most. His gift is designed to ensure that same support—and dignity—reaches families everywhere. It's a vision rooted in gratitude, urgency, and a belief that Dartmouth is uniquely positioned to lead a national transformation in how we care for our communities.
