People often think palliative care is about dying well, but the focus of our program is on living well, whether a person has years left or days. By listening carefully to patients with serious illness and their families, we help them form realistic goals and give them the supports they need to achieve them.”

Our Commitment to Patient- and Family-Centered Care
The Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care is a place of comfort for critically ill patients and their families. In a homelike environment, patients receive care to ease pain and manage symptoms, while families benefit from a wide array of support services.
At the Jack Byrne Center, we also train the next generation of palliative care professionals and conduct research to help enrich the experiences of patients everywhere. Through participation in community-based efforts, we’re improving access to high-quality palliative care to people throughout our region.

A Custodian, a Palliative Care Patient, and a Grateful Son. This Is Their Story.
Normand’s month at the Jack Byrne Center was the culmination of years of care that he received at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, from a heart attack to cancer treatments. Every step of the way, his son James says, his father was treated with kindness and humanity.

Gifts and Gratitude Mark Two-Year Anniversary of the Jack Byrne Center
Moved by the Jack Byrne Center’s commitment to patient- and family-centered care, generous donors have given over $1.2 million to the Center since it opened in 2017. In 2021, the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation made an additional $2 million gift to establish an operating endowment for the Center, helping to ensure that its special programs and services remain available to patients, families, and the community.
